My Work Diary: The Only Daily Routine That Made Me Super Productive in July 2019

July 2019 is a month of celebration. The most productive month in my blogging career. I have followed just one daily routine consistently, which helped me achieve the result I have always longed to achieve for the past 2 years.

When I said “consistently”, I didn’t mean I followed the routine 100%, without any deviation. No, I didn’t stick to the schedule 100%. I had my ups and downs, I had bad headaches in some days, I had mood swings some days. But I gave my best to follow the routine daily, on most of the days in the month. I was not hard on myself because its my humble beginning towards mastery.

You know in July 2019 alone I have published 7 new articles of total 10k + words.

Well Well Well, it calls for a celebration.

As I write this statistics now, I am just back from breakfast with my Hubby in my co-work cafeteria. Getting to dine at least one time together with my partner is itself a celebration.

We had poori and masala, poha (God knows what flavoured) and egg noodles. Finally, the best ginger tea. We discussed the numbers at the breakfast table, Rajesh was genuinely happy with my progress.

This is indeed a very important milestone in my career.

So, What did I do differently in the month of July?

From publishing 1 article a month to 2 in a month to big leap of 7 articles in a month. Whooo!!

If you are an ambitious person with dreams in the eyes, determined to beat all the odds so you can stand out from the crowd, yet struggling move towards your goals – I think you can learn something from this article.

I learnt it the hard way, reading and reading plenty of self-development, productivity and Habits books,  and many such articles.

My Daily Routine Consists of Only 3 Priorities

I am an aspiring blogger (a travel and lifestyle blogger, interest in photography too), have not seen a sunshine for more than 2 years.

The reason I have not seen any considerable results in the past 2 years is that I had too many things in my plate. I did everything all at once.

I did not have not priority in my life, nor did I hire any maiden help to run the routine household chores.

I was totally consumed in my daily life commitments, I failed to notice that work life is stagnant.

When I see my graph has not gone nowhere, I stopped everything at once.

I wanted to give my life a complete makeover, I want to become the person I always wanted to be.

A winner.

So I turned to take help from the books, motivational resources from internet, to know how others are doing it.

Here is one of such books helped me understand how the daily routines are important in achieving any goals in life.

Mason Currey, the author of the book “Daily rituals: How great minds make time, find inspiration, and Get to work” have studied and collated the daily rituals of 233 great minds in human history.

The above pic you see is the great Benjamin Franklin’s daily routine chart. How simple and efficient it is.

I have great collections of books for all ages about Self – development. You can find at the end of this article.

So picking all the good things here and there, I devised a schedule for daily routine (infact, more detailed time table) consists of not more than 3 priorities in a day.

“If You Have More Than Three Priorities You Don’t Have Any” – Jim Collins.

I kept my daily routines worksheet stuck in my room and saved in my google drive for daily tracking the performance.

Priority #1 – Work

Priority #2 – Physical Health: Eat Home Cooked Healthy Meals, reduce the daily caffeine intake and Workout 3x a week.

Priority #3 – Mental Health: Review the day, plan for the next day, Work- life balance, Social life, Reading books.

Now, in July 2019, I am super happy with the progress I made.

Here is what my daily routine is, detailed below.

My Number 1 Priority is Work – Focus For 5 hrs as Soon as Wake up

My number 1 priority since my college graduation in India and London – has always been the work. Health and social life always comes secondary. Nothing has changed till date, even after marrying Rajesh, even after quitting my Bank job from a reputed designation with a fat salary. My focus is always on building a meaningful career, earn passive income and retire early so that I can travel more. Sounds like a great life isn’t it?.

Well, nothing has happened for 2 yrs since I chose the  Blogging profession. Even-though my learning has never stopped, professionally my graph was getting nowhere.

I chose this profession – Blogging to treasure all my travels, the happenings in our beautiful life – so that it would be a memoir of 2 humble human beings on the Earth.

I have so much to write about our numerous bike travels – especially those 11 days long motorbike trip we took first in the year 2017.

The following year in 2018, again we went on 12 days long motorbike trip in South India.

Till date I was not able to write about those 2 memorable trip in my website

Because I lacked enough time (that’s what I convinced myself).

Whenever I had little time I spent it all on “learning and researching” about blogging.

Rest of the time spent on travelling and researching for the places for the next travel.

And managing a home is not an easy task either.

After devising a schedule for daily routine, this is how my life goes.

I am at my office regularly before 8 AM.

In my office, I focus on writing, reading and researching – anything to do with my blog.

I am a morning person, so I don’t have any issue waking up early, do 15 mins of Pranayama and Kapalapathy to kick start the day.

Brew a cup of coffee, get ready, hit the road to office.

Sometimes I don’t even bother to drink coffee, I can always grab one in the office much better and stronger than I make.

If I am cooking breakfast and packing lunch boxes like before – I would not be able to reach office so early.

Though spending time in the kitchen seems important for cooking healthy meals for self and family, I choose to work on my career goals first.

For example, if I am a food blogger, it would seem relevant to have a daily routine of cooking as soon as waking up.

But now it doesn’t.

If I am doing Power Yoga group class or gym workout as soon as I wake up like before – I would be left with no energy for the rest of the day. So, I will be tired to get ready and ride to the office.

For example, if I am a fitness blogger or a personal trainer, hitting the gym as soon as waking up makes sense.

But now it doesn’t.

Of course, being fit is important, going to the gym would compliment my fitness goals. Knowing I can always go to the gym after completing my blog work, I choose not to go first thing in the morning.

My morning rituals are very simple – easy to do tasks – so that all the energy are saved for the most important task – Blog.

I am fresh from a good night’s sleep, my body and mind is vibrant with good energy.

This is what I do once I reach office –

  • Read positive thoughts and quotes for 15 to 30 mins
  • Review the to-do list for today which I prepared yesterday night
  • Check my website stats and organic traffic

Whether I am working from Office or Home, Whether I woke up early or late, No matter what, I do the above 3 tasks as soon as I open the laptop.

My hubby is a night owl, he wakes up at his own will but definitely not before 8 am.

Here goes his daily routine

As soon as he wakes up – first thing he does is opening his laptop even before he opens his eyes. This has not changed even a day, not even during our bike trips. He works for a couple of hrs, then he hits the gym depends on the schedule, then he joins me in the cowork office for a noon tea.

In W. H. Auden’s words mentioned in Mason Currey’s book, “Routine, in an intelligent man, is a sign of ambition”.

My hubby is an ambitious man, the very trait I admire the most in him.

Though he doesn’t have a strict ritual, his priority has always been his work. He has not excused himself from the work even on weekends, unless I make a plan for shopping or outing. You Know, Of course, that we travel places on most of the weekends, he would be carrying his laptop in his tank bag wherever we traveled.

(TankBag – a bag with a magnet that sits comfortably on the bike petrol tank, no fear that it will fall off, it has served us best for more than 3 years and it is still good as new. Since it is a convertible backpack or work-bag, we keep laptop, camera, mobile and other travel accessories for an easy access. You can see the picture here in this article.)

Also I make things easier for him by running the house, managing the cook and maid, so he doesn’t need to worry about home.

Wish I could be as consistent and hardworking as him.

Lesson – Focusing on the number 1 priority as soon as waking up is the best daily routine to have for seeing the results. Maybe you are not an early riser like me, maybe you are a night owl. Whatever the time it is, focusing on the most important task first thing as soon as waking up would move us closer towards the desired goals.

The Other Two Priorities in My Life Are For Achieving Personal Goals

My first priority is always working towards my career goals, my other 2 priorities are working towards personal goals.

The last 2 priorities are based on improving Physical health and Mental health.

My career goals may change over the period of time, but these personal goals are going to be my lifetime journey.

As of now, I am happy with the progress I made in terms of both physical and mental health.

Here is a sneak -peak of how I do work – life balance once in a week.

Here is how I have implemented consistency in both my professional and personal life in recent years.

Since this is my work dairy I have just shared a few words about my personal goals. I have no particular daily routine on my personal goals, I have kept it flexible so that I can give more attention to my career goals.

Here is what I am planning to improve on my daily routine in the coming months.

Going Forward

I am happy my daily routine paid off in one month.

I am sure I can achieve more with the deliberate practice.

Being consistent is the hardest thing to do. If am not consistent with my work, I should be forced to see my July achievement as just a luck.

Here is what I am going to do.

Again I am keeping my new daily routine very simple and minimal, so I that it wouldn’t be hard to follow. It would not give me pressure just even thinking about it.

  • Around 7 PM, soon after dinner, sit down with a notepad
  • Pick a topic I wish to write next day
  • Brainstorm the topic, come up with a rough draft with subheadings
  • Next day, as soon settling in office, start filling the draft
  • Finish What I started – make sure to hit the publish button.

These are the five points I have for coming months. I will follow the schedule, track my performance and compare with the July results. And based on that will decide the next game plan.

These are a collection of books for wisdom on Work, Habits, Productivity, Risk Taking and Becoming Rich.

As you can see its mix of books, they are relevant not just to the daily routine this article is focused on.

They are all related. This is how.

From day dreaming to developing a clear vision, from desire to achieving goals, from bad habits to productive habits graduation, from earning money to wealth building – the above book collections will provide wisdom for all walks of our life.

To Sum Up

This is my “work diary” category in my blog website. Here I aim to write about my career goals, my work habits, daily routines and passive income from the blog.

Well, publishing 7 articles in July month was a milestone in my blogging career.

This article was about how I was able to make one small success despite aimless wandering for the past 2 yrs.

This is what to take away from my experience:

Work On the First Priority As soon as waking up- when energy is at its peak.

Show Up Daily. Consistency is important to see the desired results.

Daily Think about the goals – mentally picture step by step method to work towards the goals.

It is worth it.
